July 24

I've had a few people ask me for a medical update on Zack. He is still paralyzed from the chest down and has no movement in hands, fingers and wrists. Zack is classified as a quadriplegic. He does have movement in his shoulders and forearms and is getting some tricep/bicep strength. For instance, he can now bring the back of his hand up to his face. He has sensation down to his toes and that feeling has also gotten better. He used to not feel the shot given to him in is stomach everyday and now says he can feel it! Zack has apparently lost 33 lbs. He HATES the food here so it is making it really difficult for him to gain any weight. His spirits are still focused and positive. He's looking forward to going home soon.

Thank you for being a part in Zack's recovery. Love, Amber

July 23

Zack has not been eating or sleeping well. He's very uncomfortable and his body goes into spasms all night long. We've tried sleeping pills, but they are having the reverse effect. He's getting frustrated and feels helpless. Please pray specifically for Zack today, he needs his rest.

On another subject, a lot is going on....we are probably leaving within the next 2-weeks. It doesn't look like the TLC program is going to work out for Zack. Turns out the program is a little different than we thought (more for adults) and may not be the best fit for him. Since he will be coming home soon, we have A LOT of work to do. We have already started on the house modifications--walkways, ramp, widening doorways, workable bathroom, etc. The biggest decision right now is his wheelchair. He's trying out different ones this week. We are still looking into the van conversion options (very expensive), but needed nonetheless right away. They have been teaching me how to do most of his care and I'm participating as much as possible, but feeling a bit overwhelmed with it all.

It's been a span since we've updated, so wanted to give you a brief today. More details and pics to come. Again, we appreciate your support. Love, Amber

July 19th

Zack went on his first outing today! Zack, his brother Levi, and another patient and friend of Zack's named Nick all went to the movies! One of his occupational therapists took them. Last week Zack hesitantly tried out a power wheelchair and had it mastered in about 3 minutes! He's now "zippin" around the entire hospital grounds. He's got some independence. The nurses have to come looking for him but encourage Zack to get out. You won't find him in his room now. He's still smiling and enjoys visitors, but be careful - he may run you over!
Love,
Amber
