The Old and The New

I passed a bus stop the other day, as I drove by I realized it was the bus stop I'd dropped Zack off at (with friends) a few times to go to the beach on their own. I'm glad he was able to experience some independence. I'm happy he talked me into letting him fly to New Mexico on a plane for the 1st time (by himself @15 yrs old) to visit his good friend, who'd moved there.

Zack was the kid who learned to ride a 2 wheeler bike at 3 &1/2 years old, this included jumping off curbs! He saw his older neighbor & friend do it so of course he had to try. He said "mom take off my training wheels" I was just humoring him and told him it will take some practice. He said hurry take them off and off he went!

I sure miss somethings, I miss Zack's messy handwriting, the sound of him coming home, his strong hugs, him tickling his little siblings, watching him dirt bike ride, I miss him complaining he had to walk "all the way" home, I miss telling him to be careful, I miss him picking me up and embarrassing me, I miss him doing cannonballs into the pool and making sure I got splashed!

I'm still not use to words like paralyzed, quadriplegic, handicap or wheelchair assessable...I don't know I want to get used to those words.

Zack and I use to go skiing / snowboarding. 1st time he was 5 years old, I put him on skies and he starts down the hill he looks back at me and says "mom how do you go faster!?"

We have been awarded a scholarship to go to a adaptive ski school in Durango Colorado for 6 days! I'm excited and nervous, it will definitely be a new adventure. One thing I still get to see is Zack's beautiful Smile!

Zack was paralyzed in a beach accident Memorial Day 2010 and was told he had a less than small chance to ever stand or walk again. Thanks for beating the odds Zack!

As you can see it takes all his energy to walk in this short video. Zack broke his neck and was paralyzed instantly on May 31, 2010. Keep it up Zack!

Homecoming 2011

Zack was voted Jr. Homecoming Prince at his high school (YLHS) for 2011. He wasn't sure what to think at 1st but it ended up being a fun experience.

They took group pictures one evening, had a few practice runs, 2 Rally's the day of the homecoming game (where they crowned the senior King). Then that night was the football game where Zack & court went out to the field at 1/2 time, and the senior Queen was crowned. The football team won! (undefeated I believe).

Back to School

After being gone (2) summers and missing his whole Sophomore year Zack is "Back to School" as a Jr. this year.
He goes (3) days a week to YLHS and we continue to drive to Carlsbad for physical therapy (2) days. We still have a teacher come to the home to help him with school work. Zack's favorite part of school is 6th period wrestling where he helps keep score and gets to hangout with friends. He also talked his brother Levi into joining the team.
He says its definitely different being back in high school after injury, but he's adjusting.
A bus comes and picks him up he did not like that idea! but its a nice break for me (and my back) so he agreed to it.
As you look through the attached photos check out Zack's art work!! Remember this is traced by a boy who has VERY LITTLE movement in his fingers and just held a pencil again for the 1st time since a try in the hospital a year ago! Zack's never been into art much, but was selected as a elective he could try and I must say he sure impressed me!!
Thank you to those who have been praying specifically for finger movement. Zack would love to have more of that along with wrists and triceps...and more (of course)

Be Perfect SCI Fundraiser 2011

Here are some photos from a Huge spinal cord injury (SCI) event we went to Sat nite (over 1,000 people). Zack went upfront and "stood" he said he wished he'd done better but since the event was outside he was cold and stiff.

Zack wheeled up front with his brother Levi who held up a red shaped Stop sign that read "Have you ever dove into a wave? I did"
Then with help from 2 trainers he was lifted out of his wheelchair and "stood" at that time Levi flipped the sign that read
"And I never gave up or lost Hope." He got a huge applause, very powerful, moving and bittersweet to me as a lot of things with Zack are to me.
I was just proud of him that he even did it!

Zack Goes to Knotts

We ended our summer with a trip to Knotts Berry Farm. Zack went once earlier in the year but was not able to go on any rides, so this time he was ready!

The 1st ride he wanted to go on was some Crazy upside down, legs dangling roller coaster that I looked at and said "No way" but he insisted. Since I did get the "thumbs up" from his Dr. (that he can go on rides) I gave in, but it still feels scary to me. As we approached the area a guy working there asked us a few ?'s obviously concerned about Zack going on the ride. Zack says "I'm fine." The guy clearly was not completely comfortable with that answer but hesitantly let us through and thanks to Zack's friend (Jason) before the guy could change his mind we were already putting him on the ride! There he went on a roller coaster that I wouldn't go on and I'm a healthy "able-bodied" person! He was all smiles when he arrived back on the platform again and I think he would have tried to go again BUT he said part way through his leg kicked out and was extended for the 1st half of the ride he said he was afraid that the other leg was going to do the same thing, in that case he could of slid down in his seat! NOT TO WORRY he was seat belted in and I made sure there was a support bar in between his legs. I think this actually added to the fun for Zack!

The other crazy ride was the one in the photos below there strapped in to a "swing" and then they go who knows how high up and swing around and around. I'm sure they could see our house from up there it was so high! Zack said it was cold and windy by the time they got to the top! So, if you're afraid of heights don't go on that one!

It was a fun evening and I hope to go again. I just wish Zack was ok with just watching when it comes to some of these rides! Ya right!!!

Zack Visits Casa Colina

When Zack was 1st injured we met other parents and "boys" who were injured before Zack, they helped walk us through the hardest time. One of the boys was Brian Goodwin he was the one who at 17 years old ran into the ocean at Newport Beach, 42nd St. (same as Zack) and was also instantly paralyzed. He has now been injured 4 years. Brian had come to visit Zack at Casa Colina and Ill never forget Brian wheeling himself into Zack's room with the biggest smile on his face. I have to say in that moment I didn't know to smile or cry, the reality of Brian then 3 years post injury sitting in a wheelchair was very hard for me. But I instantly liked his positive attitude and the fact he'd come to visit my son. Since that day Brian has become like a older brother to Zack.

In one picture below it shows Zack, Claire and Brian. Claire was both Brian and Zack's occupational therapist at Casa it was a bittersweet (for me anyway) reunion between the 3 of them.

So in my head I always knew one day we would try and give back and visit anyone who also had a unfortunate accident like Zack. But I was not pre-pared to meet Kody!

It was a very strange feeling walking into Kody/Zack's hospital room decorated with posters and pics like Zack had done.
Kody has now been released from Casa and is home. He will be going to Project Walk if all goes as planned.
I hope to be of service to Kody's family as I truly feel the heartache they are going through. The boys "timeline" is identical. I look fw to seeing Kody progress this next year as he continues his own recovery process.

Zack Standing over 1 minute

This is Zack standing over 1 minute, keep in mind he cannot get up out of his wheelchair but with the help of his trainer he is helped into the standing position then his trainer slowly lets go. Zack's legs and core are continuing to get stronger.

On another subject Zack turns 17 on (August 13th) I remember his 16th birthday, we had just come home from the hospital a week or so earlier, hard to believe a year has past. I'm not sure what were doing yet but I'm sure well come up with something!

Zack visits the "Happiest place on earth"

Yes, Zack went to Disneyland! Thanks to some kind friends who walked us in...Thank you Mickey (not the mouse) and Susan!

It was a fun day. Zack did NOT want "his mom" going to Disneyland with him but I insisted and at the end of the day I think he was glad being that I acted as "tour guide/human seatbelt" for him all day.
If your wondering if he went on rides?? YES he DID! and of course wanted to go on anything fast! I was a little apprehensive, considering the circumstances BUT with much careful thought we were able to go on Indiana Jones (definitely the most difficult) Thunder mountain (glad I was there to hold his legs that wanted to keep going to the side) Space mountain (the ride I thought would be the hardest, turned out to be one of the best) Soaring in California Adventure (Zack's fav maybe b/c I didn't have to hold onto him at all on this one) and last but not least Tower of Terror! which I must say I hated! But Zack loved.
That one was interesting they loaded everyone 1st then it was our turn to lift Zack onto the ride, I could hear a pin drop everyone was so quiet as I embarrassingly dictated where each teen should sit, so we could hold onto Zack.
It's interesting getting all the looks from strangers, I get the "oh how sad" look, the awkward stares (probably wondering what happened to him) the quick glances and then they look away real fast.
The odd thing is Zack looks like "a boy just sitting in a wheelchair" we even joke with him and say "Ok stop faking Zack, get up!"
Zack and I both noticed how many wheelchairs were at Disney, Zack was quick to point out how most of them didn't seem to "really need" the chairs! They'd get to the ride and stand up and get on and he'd be like SEE!! I had to remind him they are injured just not as bad.
At the end of the day Levi (Zack's lil bro) and Dylan (good friend visiting) went on California Scream I said "No" on this one but I haven't heard the end of it yet. Zack keeps saying we need to go back so he can go on that one! Well see...

A Mother's Struggle & Some Summer Fun

I wish I could say it comes easy for me to stay focused on the positives of Zack's injury. I'm learning. Usually at some point in my day, I get that sick feeling in my stomach, when I realize (yet again) that this actually did happen to Zack. When kind strangers talk to us I can feel myself want to say "He broke his neck when he was 15 he wasn't born this way!" I'm not sure why I feel like I need to explain that, but I do. I'm guessing it's all part of the "healing" process. I desperately want this to be temporary and I miss hearing the sound of my boy walk through the front door and down the hall to tell me, he's home. (Even though I usually already knew because Zack like Adron Do Not! know how to be quiet) haha

Something fun..One of Zack's best buds who moved to New Mexico is here visiting. As you can see in the photos they both enjoy playing video games, its great to see Zack having a good time, they make me laugh...we also went to Venice Beach it was fun hanging out, shopping and eating.

Therapy Continues

We were able to work with Travis Martin who was visiting from Dallas Texas. He is a massage therapist and worked with Zack for a few weeks. We were sad to see him leave. He did some deep massage therapy on Zack's hands and arms. Zack said he felt a difference. As you can see from the photos Zack is able to pick up a small candy with his fingers, they don't move fast or bend well but he can slowly pick something up if he tries really hard. "Where there's a will there's a way" and Zack Loves candy!

We have cut down a few things in Zack's schedule for summer so he feels he "has one" In the fall he will go back to school (YLHS) as a Jr. (2) days a weeks and Project Walk (2) days he will also continue to have school at home since he will only be at school part time. 6th period will be "wrestling" Zack was on the team before his injury, he is excited to see his friends and maybe he can keep score or something.

Life continues to roll on my emotions are still raw at times but overall we are doing well...Happy Summer.

Zack's 1-Year Anniversary

So this is it. I think the weeks leading up to this day were much worse than the day itself. I decided to let the day lead, don't need to be sad all-day nor do I need a party to celebrate his survival, even though I am of course extremely grateful for that. Since we just had a long weekend our family spent a lot of time relaxing, seeing movies and BBQing (as many others). It seemed to be enough.

In the pictures (taken today) were Brian Goodwin, friend and (2) of his trainers (David and Kirk) at Project Walk that have become friends as well. They love to give Zack a hard time and push him to do better. They are a good fit and I love their sense of humor. It's good for Zack physically and mentally going there and well worth the drive. Zack's looking forward to summer and will be starting back to school in the fall, part-time.

Thank you to all who have been a part of Zack's recovery this 1st year. I've heard myself say many times we couldn't have come this far without you. Thanks for letting me process (out loud) and for being interested in my son's progress. For that I am touched deeply. I look forward to seeing what another year brings to Zack's life and if I know him (and I do) it will be another adventure! (God be with me!) haha

Adron's Knee Surgery

Adron's knee surgery Wednesday morning went well the Dr. said. He's been recovering at home the last 3 days and is doing good. Thank you! to all who prayed for him. Were hoping for a full recovery of his knee so he can go back to doing the things he loves. He will be working from home for the next few weeks. These pictures were taken at the hospital, I thought it was funny seeing Adron in a "dress" (hospital gown) haha. I have to say it was hard walking into the hospital room, didn't think I'd get emotional over it but it was a uncomfortable reminder of when Zack and I lived there. (Different hospital) but the same equipment, procedures and smells. I am reminded just how far we have come in a year. Zack's actual 1-year date is May 31 (tues) not sure do I cry or have a celebration of life party? Maybe both.

Worlds Largest Gummy Worm!?

Yes that is a real edible gummy worm! It was Kadens 8th birthday so big brother Zack went online, found, paid for (not cheap) and had this shipped to the house. Kaden was very happy to say the least! So funny! Have they eaten it all? No way that thing is still in the refrigerator! May take awhile!

Almost a Year Post Injury

I'm trying hard to not make it a big deal but can feel the slight anxiety looming when I think about Zack's up coming 1 year anniversary May 31st (Memorial Day) of his beach accident. I've thought of visiting the accident site Newport Beach, 42nd St. but I'll wait for now. I see the ocean each day I drive to Carlsbad for Zack's physical therapy and am determined to not let his accident ruin the beach for us, since I've always loved the beach and have taken my kids there whole lives, its worth the fight.

On another note Adron is scheduled for knee surgery on May 25th please keep that in prayer he will be down about a month. Still unsure how all that will work but trusting God to help me figure that one out.

I've posted some cute pictures with Zack and his (2) younger brothers with him at Project Walk. Both brothers like to go and be with Zack when they can. The pic's are a lil blurry but you can see the smile on Kaden (Zack's 8 yr. old brother) and see how much he loves his "Biggest Bro" its amazing to watch and I feel blessed.

Easter 2011

It's been awhile since I've written. Things have been hard the last month.

It seems to just keep piling on? Stress and lack of any down time is taking its toll. I'm in the process of changing some things in Zack's schedule and looking FW to summer. Adron will be having knee surgery in a couple weeks and the Dr. said he'll be down about a month!? I have NO idea how that's going to work with his job, Zack and "our life" But more on that later...

We did have a really nice Easter - had about 20 people over including my Australian friends who have come back for physical therapy for this month. It's been great to see them again. Sue is a mother of 4 also and it's her oldest child who got injured, same age and level of injury as Zack! She's been a "God sent friend."

We had tons of food and a egg hunt for the little kids. My in-laws (Ade & Frannie) had a Great idea and we did a "eyes only" easter egg hunt, I know, the boys are a little old for easter egg hunts but (Nana & Grandpa) were smart and filled most of the eggs with $$ never too old for that! We had Levi (Zack's brother) sit in a wheelchair too so all 3 boys were the same eye level then each boy had a "little helper" so when the boys found a egg they'd tell the helper and they'd go get the egg. It was fun for everyone. Zack found the "golden egg" had a $100 bill inside! I said I want to play next year (haha).

Please keep us in prayer this month I'm having a hard time with Zack's up coming year mark (May 31) I KNOW its just a day but I'm still heartbroken and trying to accept this injury and keep hopeful at the same time. As well as keeping up with all the needs of my daily life. It's truly by God's grace I'm making it each day. Thank you for thinking of us...by the way for Mother's Day this year I'm taking the day off!

Tough Week

This has definitely been a very trying week on many different levels, I know I need to re-focus my thinking back on the positive.

One good thing is I mentioned a few posts ago that I was getting up at night with Zack sometimes 4-5x's A friend of mine made a suggestion (she also has a injured son) I took a queen size sheet and rolled it so its long and skinny then after Zacks positioned at night I tuck it under each side of the bed, when his legs "spasm" in the middle of the night his legs hit the sheet and he is able to slowly lower them back down, instead of them curling up, its allowed me (and him for the most part) to get a full nights sleep. That's been a big help. I have a great video clip I'll be posting soon too...amber

Other Things in Zack's Schedule

Zack goes to Project Walk 3x's a week down in Carlsbad but he also has school at home (2) days a week. This is a picture of Zack and his school tutor Sheila she is an amazing teacher and seems to understand Zack's style of learning plus with his disabilities she finds creative ways to teach him. It's a great fit and I am SO grateful for her. She says he's so smart (but I already knew that) haha. We both agree Zack's brain was Not affected by his injury and anyone who knew him before can vouch for that! Trust me he's still "Zack!"

This is Mark Allen I blogged once before about Mark he heard about Zack's injury and offered his physical therapy services to Zack, Mark has his own therapy unit in Irvine but since we are Yorba Linda neighbors he would come to the house. Recently though we have been going to his office since he had a schedule change but it works out great driving home from Carlsbad we pass through Irvine. Mark is concentrating on Zack's hands (per Zack's requests) even though he's capable of doing more, but of course we all agree we'd love to see those hands move again!

The single pic is of Zack and Arthur Lupsha he is a Neuro-IFRAH instructor this is a different kind of physical therapy. We heard about Arthur through another spinal cord injury patient that got great results. His office is in Mission Viejo called OC Neuro Rehab.

That's not all Zack does he also see's Michael Akong for Acupuncture, I knew very little about acupuncture before, so I'm learning a lot. The needles are not as scary as they look. Michael has been working on every different part of Zack's body, I think its a good combination with the physical therapy.

Zack also goes in his Standing frame at home. I feel like we should be doing as much as we can but at the same time I HAVE to Balance it all with regular "Life" and (3) other (wonderful) children. So we are doing what we can and making changes as we need to, it seems like just when we get a new routine down something changes, but such is life. Don't worry Zack still gets to be a teenager he finds time for online video games and is always happy to hangout with friends!

Could use some extra prayer

Its continuing to be a more challenging of weeks for Adron (zack's dad) and I anyway. Zack is still "rock solid" and for this I am Truly Grateful. God's given Zack amazing inner strength!

I've hurt my back, nothing in particular just all the lifting I do. Its getting better but Adron is on crutches right now he hurt his knee pretty bad. Being the great dad he is he took our 6 year old daughter to the "Roller Rink" and last trip around the rink, they both fell (I think he forgot he's not 12 years old anymore!). He's going in for x-rays tomorrow but he cannot put any pressure on it. So that's more lifting for me and Levi (zack's brother)

Please say an extra prayer for us. This blog has really helped me process my feelings thank you for reading it. ~Amber

P.S. It would be also great if Zack could sleep through the night. His body still "spasms" a lot at night and I get up sometimes 3-4x's a night to help straighten out his body. It has gotten better sometimes its only 1-2x's But a good night's rest can do wonders and benefits everyone.

A Little Milestone

Haven't had much to blog about and I have been down this week. There are days I just "don't want to be positive." I see kids Zack's age getting drivers licenses, cars and going to school dances and I think that's what my son should be doing. These are those years we "never forget" and yes Zack will "never forget" these years but not the way I thought he would. BUT after a day or two of thinking this way I always realize that doesn't help anyone and the fact is Zack IS injured and that is that.

A couple days ago we were sitting at the table having dinner and Zack's cell phone rang (thanks Dylan!) he picked up his phone and "threw it" to his ear and started talking. I looked at him, jumped up got my camera and took this pic. This is the 1st time I've seen him "hold" his phone. Now I have a thing with being as accurate as possible SO he is Not gripping the phone but was able to at least make his fingers curl just enough to get a light grip. He would say it was No Big deal but it was to me! I needed to see that. So on we go...Amber

P.S. Zack's been feeding himself regularly for awhile now, he wears a special fitted "glove" on his hand and we put a spoon wedged into the glove. He's also figuring out the things he can eat when he's out with friends on his own. I'm proud of him.

8-Months Post-Injury...

It has been 8 months now since my son Zack Collie broke his neck at Newport Beach. When thinking back to that day its seems So long ago and yet I remember that day like it was yesterday?

Its been a journey to say the least with the physical difficulties and emotional ups and downs a injury like this brings to a family...I thought it would be encouraging to see the progress Zack has made in a re-cap of photos. Helping Hands

Hello to everyone who participated in the "Helping Hands" program -- I wanted to send a heart felt Thank You to all of you. The meals felt like a true lifesaver, especially looking back now on the 1st few months of Zack's injury. With me living at the hospital and the other kids and Adron here it was your support that got us through. Thank you also to all the people who helped with laundry, house cleaning, kid watching and grocery shopping. Now that we are over 7 months post injury I think we have somewhat settled into our new normal and I have been adding "chores" back into my schedule one at a time. My schedule feels like a puzzle that I orchestrate daily. As hard as it is we are doing it (by the grace of God). My whole family thanks you for taking time out from your schedules to help us. Zack in "Walker"

These are photos of Zack in the "walker" different days at Project Walk he is continuing to work at his recovery. Most of the time I think how amazing he is doing and has recovered a lot for only being 7 months post injury on the other hand its a very slow process and no guarantees. Zack's legs seem to be the strongest part of his body (which is great) but he needs his core, lower back and hips to actually walk on his "own" also please keep praying for hands, wrist or finger movement. Just wanted to give a update. Its emotionally up and down as you can imagine. Thanks for your continued support. Love, Amber

Standing in 2011

Zack was loaned a "standing frame" (Thank you Goodwins) its great having one at home. When he 1st got it he could only stand about 10 minutes sometimes we would have to lower him down right away because he would get dizzy. Zack is now able to stand up for 3hours!

But I got an even better gift, on christmas eve when we were getting Zack ready he moved his 2 big toes!! Yep they move on command. I'm looking FW to the other toes following suit.

Thanksgiving in Las Vegas

I took Zack and Levi to Las Vegas over the Thanksgiving holiday. We have become friends with a mom and son (also 16) who are from Australia and have come over here for 4-months for physical therapy. The other boy (Harry) is also a C-4 like Zack he was injured dirt bike riding a little over 9-months ago. We spent our Thanksgiving this year in a smokey casino -- I ordered the turkey special of course but the boys had ribs, much different than our traditional cook all day, eat too much and clean up. I do love traditions/holidays and missed seeing the family (and having leftovers) but it was a very fun trip. We saw 4 different shows. Our favorite show ended up being the $5 deal we got last minute. It was 5 fun-filled packed days. We usually left our hotel room around 10am and didn't return until around 1am! Had a Great time being with my older boys. Enjoy the photos!

Some Great Moments...

I happened across these photos taken about one year ago. Even though its a little hard to see these, at the same time I Love them. I Love looking at Zack and seeing him becoming a man. It's strange when your kids pass you up in height and weight. Zack has always had that leadership personality. He is decisive and determined when he sets his mind to something he does it. Zack is NOT a complainer (didn't get that from me) haha He truly has NEVER once complained about his injury. He get frustrated or upset at the circumstances but has never ask "why me" Zack continues to show me how amazingly strong he is. He has had an unwavering focus since the day of the accident. I know that with God and Zacks determination he will continue to move forward. I'm reminded again how lucky I am to have my boy.

Here are just a few pictures from Zack's golf fundraiser friday, November 19th It was a very fun event. To the golfers Thank you for showing up even though the weather was cold. I'm glad the rain held off until that night. A huge Thank You to "Helping hearts for friends foundation" please visit there website if you get a chance. They have done some amazing things for people in need. Tina thank you for all your organization and to Scott who MC'd the event and made it a fun night. I don't know all the other names but I know there were many people involved. What I love about "helping hearts for friends foundation" is it is a small non profit organization of people who just have chosen to give there time to help others in need. They all have families of there own and day jobs but make the time to make others a priority. I hope to help out with a event soon for someone else.
Also Thank you Kathy Fruh and children for allowing us to be the beneficiary of Rick's 2nd annual fundraiser. I can see Rick was well loved by many and I pray that God will continue to use this tragedy to bless others as he has for us. May Gods presence be with you guys through this holiday season.
Thank You Jamie McClain who had the original idea to put on a golf fundraiser for Zack and by contacting Black Gold where he connected with Helping Hearts. Jamie thank you for all your hard work going out and selling this event to make it a success for Zack. Also your friendship has meant a lot to Zack and our family. Last but not least to all the donors who came and supported our family and gave to Zack so he can keep moving Fw in his physical therapy. This is Mark Allen he is a physical therapist. Mark heard about Zack's accident and has offered his services to Zack at home! Which really helps not having to get him somewhere. Mark has his own office in Irvine, but lives in Yorba Linda real close to us. A family we know donated us Knotts Berry Farm passes. We have gone a couple times now. In case your wondering no Zack can't go on the rides but its a nice outing and he enjoys watching the younger ones go on the rides. We have dinner or watch a western show. Zack was my roller coaster kid the faster and crazier the better! We are grateful and enjoy our time together as a family. Thank you guys and you know who you are. (Big hug)

So this Thanksgiving what am I thankful for?
I am thankful that I still have my boy. I'm thankful that he's still 100% Zack and that he has shown me truly what a strong young man he really is. That you can get through anything with God's help. We have been blessed to be on the receiving side and have seen the kindness in people we may have never been able to see. There are many hurting people out there its a choice to notice and get out there and do something about it. I hope this Holiday season will bring you a chance to give back. Zack's New Room!

Another Big Thank You is in order to Vince and Donna Campion, Yorba Linda Sunrise Rotary Club and my friend Stephanie Ruppe they have re-done Zack (and Levi's) bedroom. It is a small room and the boys share it. It was not a very great room to hangout in before but that has changed. The YL Rotary Club came to the house and actually put together the furniture they bought for us. Vince Campion is a realtor who read Zack's article in the OC register. He is part of the Yorba Linda Sunrise Rotary Club they wanted to help us with a project. Stephanie is a friend who I had asked if she would help me with Zack's room, when I got a letter from Vince so I asked Stephanie to call him. So between all of them Zack now has a pretty cool "teenage friendly" bedroom to hangout in. Thanks you guys!

Finished room...

This is Randy Maddix President and CEO of R.E.M sleep solutions. Randy is a friend of Vince Campion and heard about Zack and donated the most amazing bed ever. It is a full long temperpedic type ADJUSTABLE Bed! It has build in massage the head and feet can adjust up and down in different positions which is great for Zack and allows him to be able to change positions. We have now been able to give back his hospital bed that was in our living room and Zack can sleep back in his own room. If your thinking of buying a bed please give Randy a call @ 877.REM.BEDS I know that sounds like a sales pitch but I'm telling you its a great bed we are always laying on it with Zack. Thank You Randy!

To replace the hospital bed in the living/family room Lazy Boy in Yorba Linda donated a Lazy Boy recliner chair. Zack can now join the family and sit in a regular recliner chair. Its Great to have him in with us when were all watching a movie or just hanging out. Thanks Lazy Boy. The Yorba Linda community has been so supportive. Again I'm truly overwhelmed and grateful. Thank you.

Zack on the Computer!

Yes! That is Zack on the computer. Zack has figured out how to use his thumb's weight (even though it doesn't work) to push down on the keys of his key board and iPhone. He can text like crazy and he goes on facebook like most teenagers (and adults) these days. When Zack puts his mind to something he does it, that's who he is. His positive attitude and prayers are moving him forward.

I do want to clarify this injury is NOT at all easy to deal with. For a once Very active teenage boy to have to be so dependant on help is extremely difficult, especially at his age when you are stretching your independence anyway. There are days when I wish he could call his friends and run out the front door like he use to or walk home from school and then complain to me that I made him walk "all the way" home.

We have to feed him, shower him, dress him, and more but what continues to surprise me is the strength I see in Zack and the mind set that he IS going to get better. What will that look like? No one knows right now. So we just take it a day at a time, stay hopeful, positive and pray for the best outcome. We live life in the meantime and look for all the blessings that are right along-side of this tragedy.

For now Zack is picking up where he left off with some things like playing one of his favorite online video games with NO hands, fingers or wrists! So the saying "where there's a will there's a way" It's TRUE!

Those of you who still read this blog "Thank you!" Even though sometimes I feel like I'm typing for myself or it's just going into cyberspace somewhere, I hope that reading this will encourage you in your daily lives to NEVER give up.

Physical Therapy, Part 2

The last 2 weeks Zack's add a new trainer at therapy, she has been with Project Walk a long time and I was pleased that Zack had her that day. As they started working out with Zack she got so excited at some of the things he can do. She said "Zack they have been hiding you from me!" She was telling him how great it is that he has certain movements, some of them are specifically needed to walk. He is making progress. Both Zack and I were very encouraged with her enthusiasm and positive comments. Project Walk continues to be both physically and mentally great for Zack.

So those of you who do not golf (the Golf Fundraiser is Friday, November 19th) there is another opportunity to help Zack. There will be an Archery tournament. Yes I said "Archery"! For those who didn't know Adron (Zack's dad) loves it. We have all gone shooting with him and Zack was actually pretty good. The group of guys Adron shoots with are putting this on. Zack and Friends

One picture is Zack with Jacob Tomes who is friends with Zack's younger brother Levi. Jacob went to his church and asked around and brought in a bunch of different gift cards to help out our family..Thank you Jacob for your kindness.

Another picture is Zack with new friend Jamie McClain. He heard about Zack's accident through a River website post. He himself broke his back a few years ago and about 6 months ago broke his neck (with no spinal cord damage) Jamie has come over and hung out with Zack and taken him a few places. Jamie is the one who is helping put on the golf tournament coming up in November. (Details to come)

This is Jr. Girl Scout Troop 294 they have "adopted" Zack after hearing about his accident in the OC Register. They are trying to help raise support for his physical therapy and other needs. You may have seen them in the Yorba Linda Star paper 2 weeks ago! They are working very hard with multiple ideas on how to help Zack. They came to the house to meet Zack and they are a great bunch of young ladies. We just wanted to say "Thank you" to them.

Save the Date - November 19th

I am posting this "Save the Date" for Friday, November 19th. There will be a golf tournament/dinner fundraiser for Zack at Black Gold Golf Club in Yorba Linda. Helping Hearts for Friends Foundation and our friend Jamie Mclain are putting this event on for Zack. Please visit the Helping Hearts for Friends Foundation website and you can read more about it. Brochures are in process now. We are looking for sponsors and donated items for the silent auction.

This still is all very new to me and slightly awkward to ask for help. I know we just had a successful taco dinner fundraiser and are greatly appreciative! Zack's therapy costs us $4,500 a month (for physical therapy plus gas, tolls, and a meal since we're gone most of the day) and we want to get him as much therapy as we can, especially these first few years.

The DeAnda family donated the food at this fundraiser and told my friend Monica weather its 500 or 5,000 we will do it! I am still in shock over the turnout and I am at a loss for words. All I can say is if you see a Taqueria DeAnda restaurant near you (one in Orange and Fullerton) and a few more..PLEASE GO! This is the kind of business you should want to support. They would not want me to "gush" over them its seemed like 2nd nature to the owners, who were serving the people in line themselves. Thank you DeAnda Family from my heart, Thank you!

To Monica and Mike Cornelius -- You guys put on the most successful fundraisers I've ever been a part of. Monica's one of the busiest moms I know with (4) boys all in sports and a business (restoration fitness) bootcamp she still found time to put on this HUGE event! Monica has awesome organization skills and ran that fundraiser like a pro. She is also the one who set up the Helping Hands calender and has ran that now for 4 months. This Rummage Sale way exceeded any expectations I had formed.

I want to Thank United Methodist church and school for hosting this Rummage sale and working the event as well. (2 of my 4 children went to pre-school there and we LOVED it!) You guys have been So supportive.

To Annie Cruse, Grace Ehrman and All the women from the "Littlest Angel Guild" for planning this for Zack. To Rich & Sharon Vandermey their daughter Marissa and Austin who also worked all day (are friends of Zack's). To the Lugo family, Gregg Green, and ALL the husbands who helped out as well. Thank you to the people who made up the flyers and got the word out there!

There was a lot to do the day before setting up tables, organizing and receiving ALL the donations. Might you remember the HEAT wave we were having those couple days! To the ones who got up early and sold coffee, pastries and later lemonade...Thank you!

To my in-laws Ade and Frannie Collie who allowed people for weeks before to drop things off at their house and stored them until the sale. Then got a truck and drove up all the items.
I know I'm missing names because So many people helped out and made it a great success. Please Know how moved we were when we walked in mid morning and saw the place packed full of "stuff" and was told that that was only about 1/2 of what it looked like earlier. We were truly overwhelmed by your generosity of your time and energy. Thank you to everyone who came and shopped and to the ones who gave a donation way above the items they purchased. The Sale brought in several thousand $ for Zack's recovery therapy. He is so happy at the place he goes and its because of you that we can keep bringing him there.

Blog: Sept. 30th

WOW! That's all I've been able to say since last nights Taco Fundraiser. For those of you who came, you know what I'm talking about!
The fundraiser was, to say the least, an amazing success. I am completely overwhelmed by your generosity and support. I know there were people who waited over 2 hours for a plate of tacos. The raffle baskets were beautiful and packed full of wonderful prizes. My family and I are still in awe of the whole night. Taqueria DeAnda, (which, by the way, the owner of the company was serving tacos himself) YLHS, Mike and Monica, the Lindseys and ALL of the workers who helped out - what else can I say but THANK YOU! It WAY exceeded any expectations I may have had. I am planning on putting up pictures of the event and a more detailed thank you list but just know I went to bed thinking about the event and woke up thinking about it. To see all those people... family, friends and strangers it was so surreal to me. I wish I could have said "hi" to everyone. Just know how sincerely grateful my family and I are. Zack pushed through even though he's not been feeling well and told me when we got home that he had a lot more fun than he thought he would. You guys raised over $17,000... a 1/2 years worth of physical therapy for Zack! And to ALL the people who wrote Zack's name on a raffle ticket for the UFC another THANKS. He's SO excited about going to that. I'll be posting again asap!

This was not the only AMAZING fundraiser. Saturday's fundraiser at United Methodist church, put on by Annie Cruise and friends, of a Rummage Sale was also a HUGE success! We went by and stayed an hour or two and I was again completely overwhelmed by the community's generosity of their time and money. The place was packed full of items. This event was 3x's what I expected. I wish I was better with words. I have to admit it's hard being on the receiving end of this situation but it has opened my eyes even more to seeing the beauty and kindness that is in people. I look forward to the day when it will be my turn to give back. Thank you to everyone who set up the night before, sorted, priced items, and worked the next day (in the heat!). Again, I will be posting pictures of this event as well and a more detailed Thank You list.

Also, many don't know this, but a Junior girl scout troop has "adopted" Zack and had a garage sale for him that Saturday as well. The girls worked SO hard (remember that was the day it was 100 degrees!) selling lemonade and more... pictures and details to come.

I hope you realize it's really you and God who are literally carrying us through each day. May the Lord bless each one of you who has given on our behalf and may He bless you back.

I came across these photos recently, they were on the blog way in the beginning as "before" pictures. I wanted to re-show everyone how wonderful and healthy Zack was. I loved that Zack was SO strong and becoming a man at 5'10 and 168lbs. He was your typical BIG Brother who loved to tease and semi-torture the younger ones, but they instigated and loved to play back. Zack is all about fun, loud music and activities.

When looking at these pictures it makes me sad but hopeful that God can restore Zack. It may be different than what it was but I am believing that there is a bigger story behind his injury and I can choose to look for the positives along the way. I never would wish this upon anyone and my heart is broken every time my boy is sad. But I also get to see the "best" side of people during this time. Once again I thank you for your prayers and unbelievable support to Zack and my whole family.

Prayer Request for the Day

I am feeling much better but I have seem to have passed my cold to Zack even after trying hard not to but with me being his main caretaker it was tough...PLEASE PRAY that this cold passes over Zack. He's had a real bad sore throat and mine started that way and went into my ears, nose and chest. The reason I'm more concerned than just the cold is the fact Zack cannot cough up mucus and such like we can. In the hospital we had a machine that would assist with that.

Also I have to admit the severity of this injury hits all of us at random times, even though most of the time we are focused and positive please don't stop praying for us. The mental part of this injury is 1/2 the fight if not more. We enjoy hearing from you.

My family is planning on being there Wednesday Sept. 29th for TACOS! Hope to see you there.

Another Huge Thank You to the Ruppe Family

Another overdue Huge "Thank you" is to the Ruppe Family (Danny & Stephanie) we have installed a special chair into our truck that actually comes out of the car and lowers down, then we transfer Zack from his wheelchair to the chair and Zack can ride in the front seat. Its called a "Bruno" Chair.

Those that are wondering about the van we did everything to try and make that work but when Zack was sitting in his wheelchair in the van his head hit the roof, it would have been extremely costly to put both a ramp and a bubble top roof to make the van usable. We were Very grateful to the Wilsons who were so kind to donate the van and have kept in touch with them. I'm sorry it didn't workout.

The Bruno chair is working out fine and we are getting down his transfers much easier these days. Some of his friends are pro's at getting him in the truck now! I'm truly impressed.

To Danny and Stephanie this was a very generous donation to my family and we are all overwhelmed by your kindness not just with your $ but your time as well. Stephanie has also been a Big part in helping us re-do Zack's room (more about his room and pictures to come).

A few Long over Due Thank You's!

First the bathroom that has been re-modeled for Zack is AMAZING! Its beautiful the pictures don't do it justice but I tried to capture the detail that was put into this bathroom. Many people helped out to make this possible. Our goal was to make a walk in shower to bath Zack while sitting in his commode chair. The "roll in" shower with slanted flooring is just perfect and makes showering Zack so much easier!

Hi everyone! We have another fundraiser going on Saturday Sept. 25th from 8am-3pm at United Methodist Church on the corner of Yorba Linda Blvd and Ohio St. They are going to have the Rummage Sale in their Fellowship Hall Room.

Donations for the sale are being accepted on Friday Sept. 24th from 12:30-5pm (at that location)

Thank You to Annie Cruse and United Methodist Church for putting this together to help Zack get more Physical therapy.

The Fall Season's Begun...

Hi everyone wanted to give you an update...you heard about us getting rear ended on the 91 freeway on 9-2 well on 9-3 I actually rear ended someone else!

Get this I had just listened to a message from my insurance company about the 1st accident and was trying to call her back before the long weekend started, had ear piece on but stupidly looked down for a second, then back up and smash right into a ladies SUV! She was an angel in disguise though we pulled over and she said "don't worry about it!" She didn't even get my name. Thank you again to that kind stranger. I on the other hand now have to repair both the back and the front of my truck.

Zack and I are most likely fine but we will be going to Dr.'s to make sure this week. It means more to do on my already Crazy schedule. Also a friend we had met at Casa Colina passed away this Thursday...this was not one of my better weeks.

Today was a much better day though, we have decided to re-do Zack (and Levi's) room. We want to make it more "teenage friendly" and have a room Zack and friends can hangout in.
More to come on this project...

With school starting, it's the start of a new season. This was not exactly the way I had pictured my summer to go but by Gods Grace and you guys, we are getting by "One day at a time." I've noticed just as we run out of gift cards someone sends us a gas or grocery card. Thank you to each of you who have done this for my family. It's these things, plus meals, grocery shopping and laundry help, that are truly getting us through this incredibly overwhelming time. I'm in the midst of getting Zacks physical therapy schedule and school (at home) all lined up. The other three siblings are such big helpers. Levi is amazing and helps me lift Zack daily, makes him food, Kaden (7) and Laila (5) help feed him. You could say we are all adjusting to our "new normal." I've been fortunate to have met a few other moms of injured boys (young men) they have been wonderful.

I think that's about it for now...new pic's to come and heard a 2nd updated article is coming out in the Yorba Linda Star paper this Thursday (9-9).

Please Pray -- We Were Rear-Ended Today

Please pray -- Zack, Levi and I were rear-ended on freeway today. Please pray for us. The truck is driveable but will need to be repaired and it's my only "Zack transportation." My back hurts a little and I think I need to take Zack in for neck X-rays to be sure he's alright. A lot of stress.

We need prayer. Our truck fixed fast, that Zack's okay and over all prayer coverage! Thanks. ~Amber

A Little Bit of Independence

Good 'ole public transportation, Zack can now take the bus most anywhere he wants to go. For a small fee the bus will pick him up at home and drop him off. He can go to the mall, friends houses, movies, etc. He can now continue on with his busy social life. Note to Zack's friends... you can ride with him (so save your change$)!

Meet Cody!

Zack's Birthday Bash!

Zack's 16th B-day Bash was a Big hit! Thank You to all that came out to celebrate and support Zack. We opened his gifts the next day and enjoyed reading each card, I'm sorry I wont be able to send out individual Thank You's, but know Zack was all smiles and definitely felt loved. By the way the winner of the Trader Joe's raffle bag went to Marrissa Metoyer! Also Zack slept through the night that night and every night since after we adjusted a medication that I believe was causing the insomnia.

Project Walk is going great he made his trainer and all of us very happy when he moved his legs today!!!! I even caught it on video (more about that to come).

Zack has gone to the movies, and to a couple different friends houses to hangout, that's my social boy!

I also wanted to Thank you for the encouraging comments on the blog, I don't have time to respond to them, but I appreciate them and feel supported.

Project Walk

Zack started physical therapy at Project Walk in Carlsbad. Zack says he loves it there and feels welcome. He is meeting new people everytime he goes. For this month, we make the hour drive 4x's a week. This will taper down come school's schedule next month. But for now we want to go as much as possible.

Specific Prayer Request & Zack's Birthday

We need specific prayer about sleeping. Zack has had insomnia for weeks but has progressively gotten worse, to the point he's up all night with anxiety and crazy spasms. He usually falls asleep about 5a, but then I have to wake him for therapy so neither of us are sleeping well, as you can imagine, we're exhausted!

We have tried 4 different medications all have had the reverse reaction. Please pray for rest, there is a lot I need to organize and trying to us used to our new demands.

On a happier note, 8/13 is "my boy's" 16ht Birthday. Happy Birthday Zack!

Home!!

Going home? We are supposed to go home today, but are still waiting on some necessary equipment -- we can't go home without it. We are BOTH ready now! It is going to be a transition whether we leave today or next week, so we might as well just go for it. I gave Zack his shot in in his stomach, was waiting on the last minute for it since it was the last thing I needed to do.

It's a little bittersweet saying goodbye to some of the staff here, especially after living here for over 8-weeks. It's been good, but it's time to move on.

This is Kristen! She is a volunteer here at Casa Colina and she has become a good friend to Zack. She is also a swim instructor and has taken Zack into the pool. We're lucky too, she happens to live really close to us.

HUGE NEWS!!!

Zack's body has random spasms that have been occurring for weeks and have progressively gotten stronger and more frequent. Recently we have been noticing he can use the spasms to move his legs. For instance, when he has a spasm and concentrates hard, thinking about moving his leg, it moves!!!! He can't wiggle his toes, but can push/touch them together through the spasm.

I was lucky to get it on video!
